When Something Inside You Says Stop

Understanding the hidden resistance that keeps us from moving forward

Have you ever known what you needed to do, have the conversation, make the change, set the boundary, take the chance, let something go, and still find yourself unable to move?

You may tell yourself you need more clarity, more confidence, better timing, or just a little more preparation.

But what if the real barrier isn’t a lack of motivation?

In this engaging and highly personal talk, executive coach and speaker Ryan Wallace explores the subconscious patterns that can quietly keep us stuck, even when we genuinely want something different for our lives.

Ryan calls them Code Red alarms. These are internal warning signals designed to protect us from perceived danger. The problem is that our minds don’t always distinguish between genuine danger and the discomfort that comes with change, vulnerability, uncertainty, or growth.

When those alarms fire, they can show up as hesitation, overthinking, procrastination, perfectionism, staying busy, avoiding difficult situations, or convincing ourselves that “now isn’t the right time.”

Ryan will introduce five common traps that can keep us from moving forward:

Readiness: waiting until we feel completely prepared.

Busyness: staying occupied so we don’t have to face what really matters.

Perfection: believing it has to be exactly right before we begin.

Self-Preservation: protecting ourselves from rejection, failure, judgment, or uncertainty.

Loyalty: remaining attached to people, identities, expectations, or old versions of ourselves that we may have outgrown.

Through stories, humor, reflection, and the true story of a ballistic missile alert in Hawaii, Ryan will help participants recognize when an internal alarm may be protecting them from something real, and when it may simply be protecting them from discomfort.

You’ll leave with Ryan’s iACT NOW Method, a practical tool for recognizing resistance in the moment and taking the next intentional step even when fear, uncertainty, or discomfort hasn’t disappeared.

This isn’t about forcing yourself to “think positive” or becoming fearless.

It’s about becoming more aware of what is happening inside you and learning that an alarm doesn’t always have to become a stop sign.

About Ryan Wallace
Ryan Wallace is a certified executive coach trained through Fielding Graduate University, where he studied the neuroscience of human behavior change and performance.
His interest in this work is also deeply personal. After recognizing how subconscious patterns had limited his own life, Ryan began studying why capable, motivated people can know exactly what they want to do and still struggle to do it.
Today, he helps people identify those hidden patterns, understand the alarms underneath them, and take meaningful action toward the lives they want to create.
